Protect Our Community from Hantavirus

Public health officials are monitoring a recent Andes virus outbreak linked to international travel. At this time, there are no confirmed Andes virus cases or exposures in Arizona Tribal communities, and the risk to the public remains very low.

What you should know:
🐭 Hantavirus is carried by rodents, most commonly the deer mouse in Arizona and the Southwest.
⚠️ Exposure can occur when breathing in particles contaminated by rodent droppings, urine, saliva, or nesting materials.
🤒 Early symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
🫁 Severe illness can affect the lungs and cause difficulty breathing.

Help protect yourself and your family:
✔️ Remove brush, trash, and wood piles near your home
✔️ Store food securely
✔️ Seal openings where rodents can enter
❌ Do not sweep or vacuum rodent droppings, as this can spread contaminated particles into the air

If you develop symptoms after rodent exposure, seek medical care right away.
