Proposed Name Change of Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is considering a formal name change that would replace one or more non-Indigenous names with traditional O’odham and Piipaash names. In 2023, Council identified language preservation as a key Community priority, and the Strategy “P” Team was formed to support language preservation, maintenance, and revitalization.

A name change would be a significant effort that requires Community feedback and broad support. Your input will help determine if this is a goal that can or should be realized.
